Kathmandu: The Department of Drug Administration (DDA) has issued a directive requiring antibiotic medicines to bear a red line on their labels. DDA Director General Narayan Prasad Dhakal explained that this measure is aimed at preventing consumers from taking antibiotics without a prescription from a physician.

The red line on antibiotic labels serves as a visual indicator that the medicine should only be taken under a doctor's guidance. Dhakal emphasized that this campaign is not only meant to discourage inappropriate antibiotic use but also to inform consumers about the nature of the medication.

Pharmaceutical companies and drug importers have been instructed to incorporate the red line on antibiotic medicine labels once the existing stocks of the first and second packaging materials for Group 'B' antibiotics are depleted, or no later than six months from the directive's issuance date.

This move aligns with international practices designed to curb antibiotic resistance by ensuring responsible and informed use of these medications by healthcare providers and the general public.
